i'd rather live my life than be a tourist in a shell,

always taking photographs but never being painted.

the transience of flesh and bone is documented well

but experience, in life planned out and safe from chance...

...is tainted.

very recently i was at sebastian joe's ice cream shop on hennepin with miss katherine fink and others, when she came up to me and mentioned that a mr. tom waits may possibly be a patron of SJ's at the moment. she led me to the window that separated us from the person in question--and sure enough, there was a post-middle aged man with dark hair and a pin-striped suit sitting at an outside table by himself, enjoying a delicious helping of sebastian joe's ice cream. i looked at katie with a shocked expression as we went outside to sit at the table next to him. i tried to inconspicuously glance over every so often and--pretty sure this was tom waits. we were too nervous to ask--so we just sat and wondered. after a while, he got up and walked across the street to his limousine (not a stretch limousine--the regular sized model--a very expensive car). later i talked to a co-worker of mine who has seen everyone from jimi hendrix to black flag to led zeppelin in their early days in minneapolis. he told me it was very likely mr. waits as he tends to play often down here--that he has connections to minneapolis. pretty freaking awesome if you ask me. katie, why didn't we ask him!? aww. shucks.

in completely unrelated news:

today i conquered the pre-autumn doldrums and became one with the universe for a few moments. though i'm already experiencing the inevitable descent from that lofty and elusive realization, at least i'm taking a gentle glide rather than a flying leap back down to earth. i shan't be visiting those depths again--for a while, at least.
